The first edition of the Mixed Emotions card deck was a grand usability test involving more than 15,000 people. The feedback of those users led to improvements in the second edition.

This page explains those differences.

Packaging

The first edition was packaged in an over-sized throw-away box in which the cards couldn’t be conveniently stored, so a drawstring bag in which people could carry their cards was included. Unfortunately, the cards tended to move about in the bag and rubbed the ink off each other.

In the second edition, a smaller but heavier box does a better job of protecting the cards than the bag did. The perfect-bound booklet is much longer at 96 pages, but it is dimensionally smaller so it fits in the same box as the cards.

Cards

The cards in the first edition were relatively thin and were therefore fragile. In the second edition, the cards are printed on heavier stock and are matte-laminated to protect them. They have a smooth, silky texture.

The number of cards and the images on them remain the same. However, what used to be the Jealous card is now Envious, the words “Platonic” and “Romantic” have been added to the two Love cards, and a few of the small words at the bottom of the cards have changed.

Blank cards

The blank cards are now truly blank, so you can illustrate them yourself.
